Seven of my favourite shoot spots, and why couples love them
A pre-wedding shoot is one of the best things you can do before the big day, and it's included with both of my wedding packages. It's a relaxed 45 minutes or so in front of the camera, no pressure, just the two of you. You get comfortable with me and how I work, we have a proper laugh, and by the time your wedding day arrives the camera feels like an old friend rather than something to dread.
Haven't booked a photographer yet? These spots work brilliantly for a standalone engagement shoot too, and they're ideal for save-the-dates, since you'll have a gorgeous set of images well ahead of time. As a South Wales wedding photographer, here are seven locations I genuinely love shooting at, all places I've worked at myself, and why each one might be right for you.
1. Cardiff Arcades
Cardiff city centre
These Victorian and Edwardian arcades are my secret weapon when the Welsh weather won't play ball, and as a South Wales lad, they're home turf for me. Tiled floors, wrought-iron balconies and warm shopfront light make for relaxed, editorial portraits, and you stay completely dry. Perfect for couples who love a bit of city character over a beach.
2. Dunraven Bay, Southerndown
Glamorgan Heritage Coast, Vale of Glamorgan
If you want a location that has the lot, this is it. Layered Heritage Coast cliffs, lush greenery, the old walled garden and castle ruins, and that huge sweep of sand, all in one place. It's breathtaking at golden hour, and we can get four or five completely different looks without straying far. Honestly one of my favourite spots in the Vale.
3. Bryngarw Country Park
Brynmenyn, Bridgend
Over 100 acres of woodland, meadows, a lake and formal gardens, so we get loads of variety in one easy spot. It's lush and green spring through autumn, with quiet corners away from the crowds. I love how calm it feels here. Great for couples who'd rather be among the trees than out in the open.
4. Margam Orangery
Margam Country Park, Port Talbot
The grounds at Margam are stunning. Dramatic, romantic and made for photographs, with the Grade I listed orangery itself as a real showstopper. It's one for couples getting married here, as that's really when you'll have access. Otherwise you'd need to arrange permission first. If you are tying the knot at Margam, a pre-wedding shoot in the grounds is the perfect way to fall for the place before the big day.
5. Mumbles Pier
Swansea Bay
Proper seaside nostalgia. The pier, the bay and those pastel skies give a fun, easy-going feel that suits couples who don't take themselves too seriously. We can grab an ice cream, have a wander and let things stay natural. Some of my favourite candid shots happen here, and the sunsets are genuinely beautiful.
6. Rest Bay, Porthcawl
Porthcawl, Bridgend
Wide open sand, rolling surf and enormous skies. Rest Bay feels free and unfussy. There's loads of room to move, so the shoot stays relaxed and playful rather than posed. A brilliant choice for couples who want that breezy, windswept coastal look (bring a jacket, it's bracing on a good day).
7. Porthkerry Country Park
Barry, Vale of Glamorgan
A bit of a hidden gem. The towering railway viaduct, shady woodland walks and pebble beach pack three different looks into one location. It's quiet and romantic, with that lovely dappled light through the trees. Perfect for couples who want somewhere a touch off the beaten track.
